Every year I wait for my favorite season. Spring, you ask? No! Girl Scout Cookie Season!!
A bit of history: I was a Girl Scout for about 4 years. I was a Brownie for two and a Junior for two. When I got to sixth grade, two things happened. One, I moved to a new town where I knew no one, and two, Girl Scouting was no longer cool. So, being the new girl, you understand why I didn't start asking around about a local troop (and, subsequently, begged my mom to keep quiet on the topic when talking to the other girls' moms).
While I was a Girl Scout, my mom was a troop leader, so she spearheaded the cookie sales every year. For about a month, our garage was filled with cases upon cases of the delectable treats. And, as always happens to the leader, what didn't get bought by the community was bought by our family. This was ok, as we were huge GS cookie fans. Over the years, we would continue to buy cookies from the GS troops, devouring some and keeping extras in the freezer to eat over the next few months as we impatiently waited for the season to come around again. As an adult, I feel it's likely that I look forward to it even more than when I was a kid!
Today, I purchased my first three boxes of cookies. Seeing as my husband is not home and I had a KILLER workout this morning, this is a perfect opportunity to give in to my once-a-year-mega-craving.
And now, I give you my formal ranking of Girl Scout cookies, in order from mildly appealing to Oh-My-God-I-Can't-Believe-I-Just-Ate-The-Whole-Box.

#8: Sugar-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies
Sugar free? I don't think so. Next, please.
Sugar free? I don't think so. Next, please.

#7 Dulce de Leche
I have to admit that since these are brand-new, I haven't tried them yet. But I'm not a caramel fan, and frankly, they need to earn their ranking among the elite cookies. The only reason they're not #8 is because I'm assuming these actually HAVE sugar, therefore qualifying them as an actual cookie, and not flavored cardboard.
#6 Lemon Chalet CremesWhile I don't normally care for lemon desserts, I'll admit that this one is actually quite tasty! But I do prefer the former lemon cookies, with the glazed tops. Mmmm....
#5 TrefoilsThis shortbread cookie is like an old friend. It's not necessarily the best tasting cookie in the bunch, but it's been around forever, it never changes, and I do find it to be utterly addicting once a row is opened.
#4 Thin MintsNeed I explain? Many say this is their favorite, and it's for that reason that last year, Scott and I bought 15 boxes in March and froze them. When we were married in August, each guest received 3 Thin Mints at their seat as a wedding favor. They were a big hit!
#3 Do-Si-DosLike the Trefoil, this one isn't all that special, but I always find that it's one of the first boxes I buy, so there must be something there. I love to separate the cookie, peel away the peanut butter in the middle and eat that first, then eat the crunchy part second.
#2 TagalongsWhen I was a Girl Scout, these were introduced and were immediately my favorite. I'm a big peanut butter/chocolate fan, and when you throw in the crunchy cookie center, this one is HEAVEN.
#1 SamoasRemember up above, when I mentioned that I'm not a caramel fan? Well, there's a major exception here. I blame the coconut. My favorite desserts are those with either chocolate or coconut, and when you put them together, well.... I have no words. Perfection just can't be described.
Your turn! Which cookie is your favorite?

I very much enjoyed your post. However, I completely disagree with your ordering. I would say that your #1 is my #8. My favorites are Tagalongs and Thin Mints. YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY.
ReplyDeleteOk, can I tell you that you were the first person I thought of when I saw the Girl Scouts selling their yummy goodness outside the supermarket a couple of weeks ago? Your favors alone made me want an invite to your wedding! :) Btw, Thin Mints are my favorite!
ReplyDeleteWell, Stinkerpants, I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on that one! But if you agree that GS Cookies are DA FREAKING BOMB, then we're cool!
ReplyDeleteSteph- How did I not know about your blog? Now I have a new one on my reader! Thanks for thinking of me!
Ok, my ranking is EXACTLY the same as yours with no exceptions! We're Girl Scout cookie soul mates. :) Now I'll proceed to think about nothing but how much I'd kill for some Somoas...
ReplyDeleteJust bought my box of Samoas yesterday. Yum!
ReplyDeleteStumpy- no GS cookies in Japan, I suppose? Maybe you can get someone to buy some and freeze them for you!! That's what I would do. :)
ReplyDeleteBethany- I bought Samoas yesterday, but now Scott is home... and between the two of us, yeah... they're gone.
